Wuqinxi (Five-Animal Games) is a traditional daoyin (guidance and induction) health-preserving exercise created by Hua Tuo, a famous doctor in the Eastern Han Dynasty. It originated in Bozhou, Anhui Province. It was first recorded in Records of the Three Kingdoms·Biography of Hua Tuo, and the specific movements were first recorded in Yangxing Yanming Lu (Records of Nourishing Nature and Extending Life) by Tao Hongjing in the Southern and Northern Dynasties.
1. Composition of the exercise: It imitates the forms and spirits of five animals: tiger, deer, bear, ape, and bird (crane). Combining the theories of yin-yang and five elements, zang-fu organs and meridians in traditional Chinese medicine, it emphasizes guiding qi with form and combining hardness and softness. The tiger exercise is related to the liver, the deer exercise to the kidney, the bear exercise to the spleen, the ape exercise to the heart, and the bird exercise to the lung.
2. History and status: It has been passed down for more than 1,800 years. In 2011, it was included in the national intangible cultural heritage list (Item Ⅵ-63). The General Administration of Sport of China has promoted the standardized version of Health Qigong·Wuqinxi.
3. Health-preserving value: It can regulate qi and blood, enhance physical fitness, improve balance and flexibility, help relieve chronic diseases, and also has the effect of cultivating one's morality and calming the mind.
